John McKean/McKeen

Please be sure to check from time to time regarding possible additions.  New material will be added as e-mail is received.  On 8 February 1998 William Angle submitted an extensive file for John McKean.

On 17 April 1999 Ray Montagne sent a very interesting autobiography of  a descendant of John and Martha Cargill McKeen.  (To locate this file look under miscellaneous records link at bottom of  opening "Introduction" McKean web page.)

Some fascinating background was received on 24 April 1999.  There appears to be differing information as to who was the father of Justice James, John, Gennet(?), and William McKeen.  David Stewart, a descendant of  the John McKeen who died just prior to the family's departure for the American Colonies, writes,  "My source,  Betsy Ann Jordan's (privately printed) book written in 1979, 'Frank McKean, His Ancestors and Descendants, 1679-1979,'  shows the father of the emigrant families to be not James (the shipbuilder), but William (Ye Soldier)."   Ms. Jordan's book tells the story of  Archbishop Sharp with interesting detail.  See opening web page for McKean material to read early family history, as submitted by David Stewart.

This initial material is from the genealogical records of William Angle, showing descendants of  John McKean as he has found them:

From History of Windham, NH, pg. 639:

"William settled in Windham.  He was b. about 1750.  He started the McKeen place in Windham, and was the first resident there.  William was a clever man, but an "everlasting talker," and upon going to a neighbor's to spend the evening, would sit and talk into the dead of the night.  As a last resort, to prevent himself and others from being bored to death by his endless tongue, his father, who owned a large tract of land, deeded William the McKeen place in Windham, consisting of some 200 acres, on condition that he would locate upon it.  So about 1760, he pitched his tent in the valley between the sloping hills and beside a
murmuring brook.  He was alone, far from neighbors, and without a house, whiche he was unable to build.  So he dug a hole in the precipitous side of the hil close to the brook, and near where the present house stands, stoned up the sides, and covered it with boards, and in this "dug-out" he lived for several years.  He subsequently married Nancy Taylor, daughter of John Taylor of Londonderry, who was born 1757 and died Sept. 5, 1834.  About the time of his marriage, he built a log house of one room, through which he ran a partition.  In one part he and his wife lived, in the other he kept a cow and a pair of oxen.  Afterwards he built a framed house of one room, and his son John enlarged it to its present dimensions.  He was a Revolutionary soldier.  His brother Joseph was the first President of Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine.  He died Dec. 1824.

   Notes for ELIZABETH CHRISTINA MURRAY:

The following was dictated by Christina Murray McKeen to her  granddaughter, Lauretta McKeen Whipple, the summer of 1908:

She was born at Lochaber, Nova Scotia, June 18, 1824.  Her father, John Murray, was born at KenEdward 1785 came to  Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia, from Aberdeen, Scotland, when a youngman with four other men.  He bought a farm
about 200 acres  woodland at the five mile lake at Lochaber.  Her mother,   Elizabeth Sinclair (died 3-6-1883), called Betsey, came from  Edinborough, Scotland a week later than John Murray to  Sherbrooke - 1815 or 1816.  After a year's time they were  married, 1816 or 1817, had ten children.

They walked from Lochaber to the Forks to get married, calling  on William McKeen, Esquire [Note of Helen McKeen Groton: (mygrandfather on my father's side)] then walked home, 11 or 12  miles each way.

Three houses were built on that farm.  Christina was born in  the second house on top of hill.  Large living room, immense  open fireplace (could look up and see the sky through the  opening).  The house would crack with the frost and any water
left in a dish would freeze so hard so as to crack the dish. When the fire went out, there were no matches then, the father  generally tried to get a spark from his gun.  One day Christy  walked a mile each way on her bare feet to get a live coal  from a
neighbor's fire.  Her parents had ten children, Jessie,  Isabel, Christina, Alexander, William, John, Robert, Eliza,  Margaret and James.

Carded all the wool, spun and wove all the clothing.  Sowed  and raised fields of flax and when ripe made all the linen  sheets, tableclothes, etc., by hand.  Went nine miles tochurch - father and mother on one horse, two sisters Jessie  and
Isabel on another.  Christy would walk to Presbyterian  Church thru the woods carrying her shoes and stockings,  putting them on when near the chruch.  Also carried a lunch  attending two services.
